Internships / fellowships are an opportunity to make an impact on Boston residents. We are looking for interns and fellows who are thoughtful students, interested in municipal government. As a member of our team, you will have a direct effect on how people view Boston. You’ll also help shape the future of our City.
You are not required to be a resident of Boston for this internship / fellowship. However, you must be physically present at Boston City Hall during the week to perform intern tasks.

Common questions
Who can apply?
This internship / fellowship is open to both undergraduate and graduate students in any major, as well as recent graduates.
What is the selection process?
Our selection process may vary depending on the volume of applicants. However, our standard process involves:
- a resume and cover letter review
- phone screens for a select group of candidates
- applicable exercises, and
- final group interviews.
How long is the internship / Fellowship?
This is an eight-week internship / fellowship. The start date will be communicated to selected fellows from the DoIT HR team. Our anticipated start month will be end of June 2024 through August 2024.
Is this a paid internship / Fellowship?
Yes! We provide direct funding for a limited number of internships / fellowships. We also encourage applicants with university or grant funding to apply. Please be proactive in communicating with us about the possibility of securing external funding for the summer. This is also a question you will encounter in our application.
What is the difference between an intern and a fellow?
An intern is currently a high school student, undergraduate student, or has completed and obtained an Associates or Bachelors degree. A fellow is a graduate student (who has completed graduate school) and currently obtains a Masters, Ph.D, etc.
The pay between the two groups are different depending on degree level and the amount of years experience in the field.
