Upcoming Diversions and Shutdowns

September 3–11

Green Line D Branch service will be suspended between Kenmore and Riverside on September 3-11 for continued track improvement and infrastructure work. 

  • Free and accessible shuttle bus service will replace train service between Kenmore and Riverside. Local shuttle buses will make all stops between Riverside and Kenmore, except Beaconsfield. Express shuttle buses will make all stops between Riverside and Newton Highlands, and then run express to Copley without making stops. Riders who normally board or alight at Beaconsfield are encouraged to take the Green Line C Branch from Dean Road (4-min walk). Riders using Green Line D Branch shuttle services should budget at least 30-45 minutes of additional travel time.
  • Riders traveling inbound can also take the Green Line C Branch or Bus Routes 57, 60, or 65 for standard fare price to Kenmore station. The MBTA will increase Green Line C and D Branch service in Downtown Boston during this time to accommodate riders.  
  • The City of Boston will be offering 5 free Bluebikes unlocks during this closure. Use code MBTAGREEN925, while supplies last. See the Bicycle Information section below for more information and a suggested bike route.

SEP 13–14, SEP 27–28, and OCT 11–13

Orange Line service will be suspended between North Station and Forest Hills on September 13–14, September 27–28, and October 11–13 to perform signal upgrade work. 

  • Free and accessible shuttle bus service will make stops between Forest Hills and Back Bay, as well as Copley. There will be no shuttle bus service between Back Bay and North Station. Accessible vans will be available at North Station and Tufts Medical Center to serve all stations between North Station and Back Bay, as well as Copley. Riders using the shuttle bus service should budget at least 30 minutes of additional travel time.  
  • Riders are encouraged to take Green Line service between North Station and Copley.  The MBTA will increase Green Line service during this time to accommodate additional ridership.
  • Riders are also encouraged to consider fare-free Commuter Rail service between Forest Hills, Ruggles, Back Bay, and South Station.

SEPtember 19–21

Blue Line service will be suspended between Bowdoin and Airport on September 19–21 beginning ~8:30 p.m. on the first day of the closure to upgrade the Blue Line drainage system and pump room for protection against major rain and flooding events. 

Three free and accessible shuttle bus routes will be available during this service suspension. Riders using the shuttle bus service should budget at least 30–45 minutes of additional travel time.

  • The local shuttle will make stops at Airport, Maverick, and Haymarket for transfer to Orange and Green Line service in the downtown area. It will not stop at Aquarium, State, Government Center, or Bowdoin. 
  • The express shuttle will operate directly between Airport and Haymarket, with no stops in between.
  • The downtown loop shuttle will operate in a loop from Haymarket to Aquarium to State to Government Center. 

The fare gates will be open between Airport and Wonderland for free Blue Line service during the suspension.

Riders may also use the East Boston Ferry for free service with trips departing every 30 minutes from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.

SEP 15–23 (HALF-DAY), AND SEP 20–21, 26–28 (FULL-DAY)

Fitchburg Commuter Rail Line service will be suspended to perform tie replacement work and upgrade the signal system to reduce failures and train delays.

On September 15–23, train service will be suspended for half-day between Fitchburg and Wachusett from approximately 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. A dedicated diversion schedule will be available on MBTA's website.

  • Free and accessible shuttle service will be provided between Fitchburg and Wachusett while train service is suspended.

On September 20–21 and 26–28, train service will be suspended between North Station and Porter Square. Passengers are encouraged to utilize existing subway service on the MBTA Red Line and Green Line(s).

  • Porter Square ➜ North Station (inbound): take Ashmont- or Braintree-bound Red Line service to Park Street, transfer to Union Square- or Medford/Tufts-bound Green Line service, and disembark at North Station. 
  • North Station ➜ Porter Square (outbound): take Riverside- or Heath Street-bound Green Line service to Park Street, transfer to Alewife-bound Red Line service, and disembark at Porter Square.

During the Green Line D Branch shutdown from September 3-11, riders are strongly encouraged to use bikes as an alternative mode of transportation.
