JFK/UMass Station Area Action Plan
We're making it easier to get to JFK/UMass and laying the groundwork for safety and accessibility improvements in the surrounding area.
This project will develop a concrete plan and comprehensive vision for improvements in and around the MBTA JFK/UMass Station at Columbia Road. This includes both steps that can be taken by the City of Boston independently on City property, as well as actions that will need to be coordinated with other stakeholders such as MBTA, MassDOT, and DCR.
The Plan will allow for the City to prioritize projects and interventions in the near term while also allowing for longer-term planning and policy-making around larger projects. This project is intended to inform City planning and policy efforts around state and federal transportation and infrastructure investments, while also shaping immediate and mid to long-range investments and plans for the City across a range of departments.
Improving Access For All
This plan focuses on improving access to and through the station area. Whether people are biking, walking, or taking the bus, this plan will guide improvements that make the area safer and more accessible for all.
Planning for the Future
This process will closely coordinate with the many plans and projects currently underway in the neighborhood, including the Moakley Park Vision Plan, the Kosciuszko Circle/Morrissey Boulevard Planning Process, the Dorchester Bay City development, and many others. By coordinating with these surrounding planning processes, we will make sure that our plans are consistent with each other and reduce the planning burden on the community.
Laying the Groundwork
We don't want this plan to just sit on a shelf. This plan will develop projects and playbooks for funding and implementation, so that we can deliver real improvements to Boston residents and all who use or pass through this area.
