  • School to Prison Pipeline:

This session will investigate the overemphasis on policies and practices that lead to the mass incarceration of the youth. The school-to-prison pipeline is a process through which students are pushed out of schools and into prisons. There is evidence that shows that the school-to-prison pipeline primarily captures and affects students of color, students with special needs and English Language Learners which mirrors the over-representation of these groups in America's prisons and jails.

This workshop will focus on the many layers that contribute to the pipeline such as:

  • Suspensions
  • School policy
  • High Stakes Testing
  • Alternative school constructs

We will also look at strategies and best practices that will help these populations escape the STP trajectory through asset based planning and intentional and authentic efforts to disrupt the School to Prison Pipeline.

This workshop will explore data points on:

    • Opportunity Hoarding
    • Socioeconomic Disparities
    • Achievement / Opportunity gap
    • Perceived Discrimination and Stereotype threat
    • Racism/Bias and the effect on student achievement
    • Solutions and Next Steps
