City Council recognizes achievements of former Mayor Thomas M. Menino

The former mayor's dedication and commitment to the residents of Boston was shown constantly throughout his work and his personal life.

During this week’s Council meeting, the Council voted to adopt a resolution in recognition of the achievements of former Mayor Thomas M. Menino in the City of Boston. The resolution was offered by Council President Pro Tempore O’Malley.

Mayor Menino was born and raised in the neighborhood of Hyde Park. He was a dedicated life-long public servant who served as the 53rd Mayor and the longest serving Mayor of Boston, in office from 1993 until 2014. Mayor Menino also served as a member the Boston City Council from 1984 until 1993, including a term as the City Council President.

Mayor Menino’s dedication and commitment to the residents of Boston was shown constantly throughout his work and his personal life. Council President Pro Tempore O’Malley was 13-years old when Mayor Menino was elected. He shared his fondest memories of the former Mayor and said, “He was just a remarkable leader for this City. He did so much for so long. He really helped transform Boston.” Council President Pro Tempore was sworn in as a member of the Boston City Council by Mayor Menino and worked with him for three years before Mayor Menino retired.

Council President Pro Tempore O’Malley also recognized the work of Alice Hennessey, who was Mayor Menino’s longtime mayoral aide and friend. Together they worked to increase parks, green and open space. This week, the Council honored Mayor Menino and Alice Hennessey for their significant contributions to the City of Boston by changing the name of Millennium Park, a 100 acre urban park in West Roxbury, to the “Mayor Thomas M. Menino Park.” The Council also recommends that the park’s playground be named the “Alice Hennessey Playground.”
