Embrace Ideas Festival

June 18 - June 21, 2024
2024-06-18T10:00:00 - 2024-06-21T15:00:00

The City of Boston is proud to partner with Embrace: The Embrace Ideas Festival, a yearly celebration grounded in arts, ideas, culture, and public scholarship, leading up to the Juneteenth holiday. This multi-day gathering brings together local, state, and national leaders to amplify anti-racism and envision a transformed Boston by 2030.

The Embrace Ideas Festival features keynotes, panels, and live music, shining a light on interrupting zero-sum game thinking regarding racial justice and realizing a democracy worthy of us all. The annual Fest is intentionally wrapped around Juneteenth, an essential holiday we uplift for those who have long celebrated it and invite those who may not have had the opportunity yet to join us in building a new national "monument" together.

Juneteenth marks the day in 1865 when Union soldiers, led by General Gordon Granger, arrived in Galveston, Texas, and declared the end of the Civil War, freeing all enslaved persons. Although the Emancipation Proclamation had been official for over two years, slavery persisted in areas beyond Union control. The Union's takeover of Texas effectively liberated the remaining slaves in the state, ending this specific form of slavery in America.

We look forward to coming together as a community for this momentous occasion and honoring this significant day in our history. Join us in celebrating Juneteenth and envisioning a more just and equitable future for all.

Juneteenth Brunch and Flag Raising

June 17, 2024
2024-06-17T12:00:00 - 2024-06-17T13:30:00

Join us for a special Juneteenth celebration as the City of Boston officially observes this important holiday. We will commemorate Juneteenth, the day in 1865 when Union soldiers, led by General Gordon Granger, arrived in Galveston, Texas, and declared the end of the Civil War, freeing all enslaved persons. Although the Emancipation Proclamation had been official for over two years, slavery persisted in areas beyond Union control. The Union's takeover of Texas effectively liberated the remaining slaves in the state, ending this specific form of slavery in America. Juneteenth is a day to celebrate Black lives, honor our shared history, and recognize the enduring fight for freedom. We look forward to coming together as a community for this momentous occasion.

Suffolk Downs Documentary

Join us on May 16, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the East Boston Public Library for the screening of “Suffolk Downs: A Race Through Time”.

May 16, 2024
2024-05-16T17:30:38 - 2024-05-16T19:30:00

Join us on May 16, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the East Boston Public Library for the screening of “Suffolk Downs: A Race Through Time”, a documentary film about the history of Suffolk Downs. The HYM Investment Group, owner and developer of the site since 2017, has created a film that details the history of the horse racing site over the decades, the activations happening onsite today, and the plans for the future as redevelopment begins.

The film begins with the building of Suffolk Downs, the legalization of betting in Massachusetts and the chronicled rise and fall of horse racing. Stories are told about the owners of the track over the years, the horses and jockeys that raced there, the concerts and events that drew in the crowds, the economic viability of the site over the years, and the legacy this site will always have. Interviews are captured with jockeys, employees of the racetrack, writers, journalists, the former Mayor of Revere, and the current property owner and developer. Jumping ahead, the film transitions to the use of the site today, following the final race in June of 2019, and The HYM Investment Group’s vision for a diverse community that will continue to develop for the next 15-20 years.

Guests are encouraged to arrive between 5:30 - 6 p.m.. The screening itself will begin promptly at 6 p.m. with a brief speaking program.
